In the ongoing battle to stand out, many websites began employing animation in 2018. Along with being eye-catching, animations can help visitors to better visualise products and services. Animations can be divisive and should be used sparingly to avoid a slow-loading site or one that just gives people a headache to look at. Our attention spans seem to be shorter than ever these days so, to combat this, bold, unusual typefaces took centre stage in 2018. These will often be the only thing visible above the fold. This is a relatively low-cost, low-effort way to draw attention to your website’s main focus and to give a clear idea of what you’re about.
Stock photos are out, custom illustrations are in. Illustrations provide a creative platform to showcase your brand exactly as you envision it. They also act as a first impression, allowing your audience to get a feel for your business, from cute and whimsical to edgy and exciting. We employed this method when we developed the branding for Spirits bar, each element was handcrafted by our talented team.
AI and chatbots
Your customers want immediate answers. Having staff on hand 24/7 to answer questions is great customer service but not very cost effective, cue the rise of AI and chatbots. Employing simple bots programmed to answer specific questions – or even ones that utilise machine learning to become more helpful over time – gives customers a more personal service without having to hire and train new staff.
Bold colours and patterns
Bold colours and graphically pleasing shapes are a great way to make your site stand out. 2018 saw an injection of exciting colour in web design, with organic and geometric patterns taking centre stage. These types of design lend themselves well to creative industries but aren’t ideal for everyone. They work especially well on single-page websites, helping to break up content into discrete, manageable chunks. Some of the key trends that we’re expecting to see this year include:
Stripping back your website to the bare bones provides a simple, clear journey for your end user. Function over fashion is going to be the next thing.
Flat design decreases loading time and creates a clean, functional experience for mobile users.
By placing all of the content on a single homepage, this type of site is easy to navigate and quick to build. However, this may not be a hit for websites that are content heavy or those that rely on SEO.
